Most people know Sarah Palin as the half of the McCain-Palin political duo in 2008. Some are also aware that she was the first woman and the youngest person ever elected as governor of Alaska. Her political endeavors and achievements run a long list but it’s her childhood to early adult life that interests many people. Before you even get to know more about the highlights of her political career, it would be hard to resist taking peek into her younger years, long before she became a household name.
Sarah was born on February 11, 1964 in Sandpoint Idaho. She is the third among four children of science teacher Charles Heath and school secretary Sarah Sheeran Heath. Coming from English, Irish, and German descent, Sarah was exposed to different cultures and customs as a child. For most of her life, she lived in Alaska where she also attended high school.
People expect that she was top among the class but what most don’t is that the former Alaskan governor was also very athletic during her younger years. In fact, she played point guard on her school’s basketball team, which won the Alaska State Championship. Her competitive nature earned her the moniker Sarah Barracuda, which stuck even after many years.
Aside from being athletic, Sarah was also active in beauty pageants with her good looks and stunning stature. She won the Miss Wasilla Beauty Pageant and made it to the third place in the Miss Alaska beauty contest. It is hard to imagine the strong woman governor bikini clad or playing flute for the talent portion. For the same pageant, she won the Miss Congeniality award and was also given a college scholarship.
Sarah went to several universities after she graduated from high school. She first went to the University of Hawaii then transferred to the Hawaii Pacific University in 1982. The following year, she went to the North Idaho College for spring and fall semesters. After attending Matanuska-Susitna College in 1985, she went back to the University of Idaho, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in communications, major in journalism.
The fresh from college Sarah didn’t venture into politics immediately. Her first job in fact did not have anything to do with politics. She worked for KTUU-TV and KTVA-TV as a sportscaster. She was also a sports reporter for the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman.
In 1988, Sarah eloped with her long-time high school boyfriend Todd Palin. Her reason was that, she did not want her parents to pay for an expensive wedding. After the wedding, Sarah helped her husband in managing his commercial fishing business. She and Todd have children: Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper and Trig.
